2015 F-150 Rough Idle and Engine Shaking

Start with symptoms and scan data, not a replacement-parts list.

Mechanic inspecting engine components, illustrating rough idle troubleshooting

Rough idle on a 2015 F-150 can reflect an ignition, air, fuel, electrical or mechanical problem. Start with the correct engine, the conditions in which it happens and any stored codes before replacing components.

In brief

Rough idle can be cold or warm, constant or intermittent, and with or without a code.

When does the engine idle roughly?

Compare cold start, fully warm idle, air conditioner on, in Park and stopped in Drive. Note whether the check-engine light flashes, stays on or is absent and whether the issue began after a recent service.

Misfire clues

P0300 describes random or multiple-cylinder misfires. Cylinder-specific P0301–P0308 codes help narrow the next test, but do not automatically condemn a coil or spark plug. Ignition, fueling, wiring, air leaks and engine condition can overlap.

Lean or air measurement clues

P0171 or P0174 may be present when fuel trims show lean conditions. Vacuum or intake leaks, measurement faults and fuel delivery are among the systems a technician may test. The two EcoBoost engines also have boost-system plumbing that differs from the naturally aspirated engines.

Basic information to collect

Identify the engine, mileage, last tune-up, any recent battery or air-filter work, and the full code report. Report whether there is loss of power, smoke, unusual noise or noticeable fluid loss.

When to seek help now

A flashing check-engine light, severe shaking, stalling in traffic or unsafe loss of power calls for stopping safely and getting the truck inspected rather than trying to drive through the problem.

Next steps

  • Identify the engine and when rough idle occurs.
  • Save stored/pending codes and freeze-frame data.
  • Review recent service and check for obvious loose connections without working near moving parts.
  • Arrange diagnosis promptly if running is severe or the warning light flashes.

DON'S OWNER NOTES

I own a Blue Flame Metallic 2015 Ford F-150 XLT and plan to add firsthand observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
