ERROR CODES / OWNER GUIDE

2015 F-150 P0171 and P0174 Lean Codes

Lean codes do not automatically mean bad oxygen sensors.

P0171 and P0174 indicate that the engine computer is correcting for a lean air/fuel condition. They are clues about the mixture, not automatic orders to replace oxygen sensors.

In brief

P0171 and P0174 refer to lean fuel trim conditions on different cylinder banks.

Understanding the banks

P0171 applies to bank 1 and P0174 to bank 2. When both appear together, a cause affecting the whole engine may be worth investigating. The technician should still confirm fuel trims and other data rather than jumping to a single answer.

When the codes show up

Note whether they appear at idle, cruise or under acceleration. Unmetered air entering the intake, inaccurate airflow measurement, fuel delivery and leaks affecting sensor readings are diagnostic possibilities. Different engines and conditions produce different patterns.

What a scan can show

Fuel-trim values, intake and airflow readings, freeze-frame conditions and accompanying misfire codes can narrow the investigation. Clearing the light immediately removes diagnostic context and may delay diagnosis.

Replacing parts carefully

An oxygen sensor can report a genuine lean condition accurately. Buying sensors without testing intake leaks, fuel delivery and wiring may not solve the problem.

Next steps

  • Save both codes and freeze-frame values.
  • Check for accompanying misfire or airflow codes.
  • Note whether the problem occurs at idle or under load.
  • Ask for evidence of a failed component before replacing sensors.

DON'S OWNER NOTES

I own a 2015 Ford F-150 and plan to add real observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
