2015 F-150 3.5 EcoBoost Cold Start Rattle
A Ford service bulletin describes a specific cold-start rattle condition.
A brief rattle after an overnight cold start can be unsettling. Ford issued a narrowly scoped service bulletin for certain early-build 2015 F-150s with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine.
TSB 18-2305 addresses some 2011–2015 3.5L EcoBoost F-150 vehicles built on or before May 29, 2015 that rattle briefly after a cold soak.
The symptom in Ford’s bulletin
TSB 18-2305 describes some 2011–2015 F-150s with a 3.5L EcoBoost, built on or before May 29, 2015, that exhibit a two-to-five-second ticking, tapping or rattling sound from the top/front-cover area when first started after a cold soak of at least six hours. Those details matter when checking whether the bulletin may apply.
Do not mix up different engines or generations
A 2015 2.7L EcoBoost, base 3.5L V6 or 5.0L V8 is not covered by this particular bulletin. Nor should later 2017–2020 3.5L EcoBoost cam-phaser bulletins automatically be described as the same 2015 issue.
Not every rattle has one cause
Accessories, exhaust components, oil-pressure issues and other engine conditions can produce noises. The duration, location and operating state help the technician distinguish them. A short phone recording made from a safe standing position may help describe an intermittent problem.
How to approach a repair estimate
Provide the exact engine and build date, ask whether TSB 18-2305 criteria match and request the diagnosis in writing. A TSB explains a manufacturer service procedure; it does not by itself guarantee free repair coverage.
Next steps
- Confirm 3.5L EcoBoost rather than another 2015 engine.
- Find the vehicle build date.
- Record how long the sound lasts after six or more hours parked.
- Ask a qualified shop to compare your symptoms with TSB 18-2305.

I own a Blue Flame Metallic 2015 Ford F-150 XLT and plan to add firsthand observations, photos and maintenance notes to these guides. I won't present an untested repair as something I've personally done.
